Initiate a better customer experience by promoting contactless payments to your customers

Make sure customers are aware that you accept contactless cards.

  • Display signs at your store’s entry and around the checkout area.
  • Signage should also be placed near the contactless-enabled payment device.

Help your customers

Help your customers through a contactless payment. Not all customers may know
they have the capability, or fear adoption of new technology

  1. Ask customers if they have a contactless card and know how to make a contactless payment. If they don’t know how, walk them through the process. Instruct them to place their card or mobile-wallet device, held flat and approximately 1-2 inches above the contactless symbol for a couple seconds, until the payment has been accepted.
  2. Give your customers confidence in using contactless. Here are some customer benefits you can highlight:
  • Each payment is assigned a one-time code that securely protects their payment information, just like with a chip card. Contactless payments comply with international EMV chip security standards and the most advanced and widely adopted cryptographic security.
  • Accidental payments are nearly impossible. Their card or device must be within 1-2 inches of the contactless-enabled device. They won’t be billed twice, even if they accidentally tap twice.
  • Tapping contactless speeds up the checkout process. Pro tip: Let your customers know as you begin the checkout process. If you wait until the end, you may not achieve a faster checkout.

Troubleshooting Contactless

Some customers may need a little help the first time (or two) that they try to initiate a contactless payment. Help them step through a payment and they may be more likely to use contactless in the future. They just may also appreciate the assistance and give you more business. Some common challenges include:

  • Not holding contactless card in the right place on the payment device.
  • The contactless card is held too far out of range.
  • The contactless card is held at an angle instead of flat.
